Art
At Kanes Hill Primary School, our Art curriculum encourages children to express themselves creatively and develop their own artistic voice. Through exploring a range of artists, materials, and techniques, pupils learn to experiment, take risks, and reflect on their work. Art lessons develop creativity, imagination, and fine motor skills, while encouraging children to appreciate and respond to different styles and cultures. Our approach helps pupils build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong enjoyment of the arts.

Curriculum Statement
Intent
At Kanes Hill Primary School, we believe art provides the opportunity for children to be expressive, creative and for all to be successful. We deliver high-quality art, craft and design lessons to promote and encourage creativity. We aim to engage, challenge and inspire pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As pupils progress through school, they will be able to think critically and develop their understanding of art and design. They will also know how art, craft and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. We recognize the importance of art in building self-esteem and providing an enjoyable creative outlet for pupils, and promote self-expression through art, craft and design in all areas of our school.
Implementation
At Kanes Hill Primary School, we give the children the opportunity to be creators. Our Art curriculum develops creativity, sets challenges, engages and inspires children and equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. The curriculum has appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to explore and investigate, create and evaluate artwork, as set out in the National Curriculum, and so will enable the children to reach and exceed their potential. Our children will be taught Art and Design in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. We want Art to allow the children to develop their imagination and creativity; to make connections through their inventive minds; and give them the skills to record their imagination and ideas. We want to ensure that Art and Design is embedded in our whole school curriculum and that opportunities for enhancing learning by using art are always taken. We also want to nurture children’s confidence in creating art, so art lessons can be a genuine place for self-exploration and freedom of expression. Using the National Curriculum, we will ensure that children receive a rich art curriculum that build on skills and knowledge from Year 1 to Year 6. Art will be taught in blocked units ensuring the integrity of the subject remains at the forefront.
Art learning journeys ensure that:
- learn about contemporary and historic artists, designers and crafts people
- respond to and incorporate the ideas of the above groups • discuss and question the stimulus/theme
- investigate materials, composition and ideas
- explore their own ideas considering different methods, styles, approaches, skills, techniques, materials and processes
- have the opportunity to develop an art and design vocabulary linked to the visual elements
- produce their own art work
- reflect and compare their own work to that of an artist/designer/crafts person studied
Our art topics will include our curriculum principles:
- Enrichment/Enjoyment (learning from artists, crafts people, designers; investigating natural and manufactured objects; using the local environment; visiting a gallery; engaging in art themed days; producing art for local events)
- Depth & Challenge (A depth of experience is gained through developing knowledge and ideas; refining and experimenting; recording observations and presenting responses)
- Quality Outcome which gives purpose to the learning (a personal outcome)
- Personalisation (Giving children choice and a passion for following own lines of enquiry- choice of media, colours, presentation)
- Connections (links to prior units; building on skills already developed)
- Relevant to our children and context
- Purposeful (Identifying the purpose for learning and the intended outcome -real life audiences/real experiences)
- Igniting curiosity
Impact
- To possess the cultural capital and to be able to discuss art articulately.
- experience how producing art can lead to a sense of satisfaction, self-belief and well being

- consider the impact of the final piece upon themselves and a wider audience
- appreciate the rich and varied cultural history of our nation and that of the other nations
- learn and use the associated vocabulary
At the end of EYFS we want our children to know/understand:
To be able to have the ability to communicate and understand, through self-expression within the arts. We want our children to create simple representations of events, people and objects and to choose particular colours and textures for a purpose. To understand that different media can be combined to create new features. We want our children to have opportunity to discuss the art and how it makes them feel.
At the end of Key Stage 1 we want our children to know/understand:
By the end of Key Stage 1 we want our children to have had experience using a wide range of materials and tools creatively to share their ideas, experience and imagination. We want our children to be developing their use of the seven elements. By looking at the work and history of different artists, we want our children to make links to their own work and evaluate and analyse using appropriate language.
At the end of Key stage 2 we want our children to know/understand:
By the end of Key Stage 2 we want our children to have developed their techniques and have a good understanding of the materials used. They will be using their sketch books to develop their mastery with increasing control. The children will work, speak and think like an artist and appreciate the rich, varied cultural history of our nation and that of other nations. All of these developments will be underpinned with a good understanding of the seven elements and accurate vocabulary
