Computing

At Kanes Hill Primary School, our Computing curriculum is designed to help pupils develop digital literacy, problem-solving skills, and creativity in a safe and engaging way. Through structured lessons, children learn to use technology confidently, understand how digital systems work, and apply computational thinking across the curriculum.

We use Purple Mash as our main teaching platform, which provides a wide range of interactive activities and projects across all year groups. Pupils also complete the ‘2Simple – 2Be Safe’ modules, ensuring they understand how to stay safe online and use technology responsibly.

Our Computing programme encourages children to create, code, and communicate, while developing resilience and logical thinking skills that will support them in school and beyond.

PedTech

At Kanes Hill Primary School, we use PedTech tools to enhance learning across the curriculum. These technologies help pupils access, create, and share knowledge in engaging and interactive ways. From coding and digital projects to collaborative activities, PedTech supports independent learning, creativity, problem-solving, and allows teachers to provide feedback on written work via Seesaw. We also use Clicker to support pupils with writing, helping them structure sentences, spell accurately, and develop confidence in their composition.

We also ensure that all technology use is safe, monitored, and purposeful, preparing children for a digital world while promoting responsible online behaviour.

Curriculum Statement

Intent

Computing is an integral and essential part of everyday life and is woven into the Kanes Hill Primary School curriculum for learning. Our pupils are immersed in a curriculum where computing is applied within all subjects so that children are at the forefront of new technology which will be used creatively to engage and support children as well as develop a thirst for learning. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology - at a level suitable for the future workplace and able to effectively and safely operate in the digital world beyond the gates of Kanes Hill Primary School.

Implementation

We will ensure that all children will have access to a rich curriculum supported by developing computing concepts that will build on their skills and knowledge throughout Key Stage 2. At Kanes Hill Primary School, children have access to Chrome books, laptops, Ipads, Interactive Whiteboards, software and Apps, used throughout lessons and interventions, to develop pupil confidence and skill development. Computing will be taught in topics ensuring the integrity of the subject remains at the forefront and richly linked to engaging contexts in a range of subjects. Employing cross-curricular links motivates pupils and supports them to make connections and remember the steps they have been taught. The implementation of the curriculum also ensures a balanced coverage but the subject knowledge imparted becomes increasingly specific and in depth, with more complex skills being taught, thus ensuring that learning is built upon.

Impact

At the end of Key stage 2, our children at Kanes Hill Primary School will be:

  • digitally literate and able to join the rest of the world on its digital platform.
  • equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely.
  • Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
  • The biggest impact we want and hope for our children is that, by the end of Key Stage 2, they feel confident and enjoy the benefits of computing whilst equally understanding the consequences of using the internet and are aware of how to keep themselves safe online.

KS1 & KS2 Expectations

By the end of Key Stage 1 we want our children to understand what algorithms are and how to sequence instructions. They can purposefully use technology to create and store digital content. They should feel equipped to use technology safely and respectfully, at school and beyond school.
By the end of Key Stage 2 we want our children to be able to solve and accomplish goals through designing, writing and de-bugging programs. They will also be able to recognise technologies and their opportunities to communicate and collaborate whilst collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information. We shall also expect our children to recognise how to use technology safely, respectfully and confidently; whilst recognising acceptable and unacceptable behaviours online.
