Maths

At Kanes Hill Primary School, we follow a Maths Mastery approach, enabling all pupils to develop a deep, secure understanding of mathematical concepts. Lessons focus on building fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills, ensuring children can explain their thinking and apply their learning in a range of contexts.

Through carefully structured lessons, use of concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations, and regular opportunities for discussion, pupils are supported to build confidence, resilience, and accuracy in mathematics. Our approach ensures that all children are challenged and supported to succeed, developing a positive attitude towards maths that will support them throughout their education.

Curriculum Statement

Intent

At Kanes Hill we aim to equip all our children with the skills and confidence to solve a range of problems through fluency and mathematical reasoning.  Teachers follow the 5 Big ideas of maths mastery demonstrating: coherence through our small step S plans, representation and structure, fluency, variation and mathematical thinking. We develop a fascination for mathematics by engaging in intelligent practice that both reinforces children’s procedural fluency and develops their conceptual understanding. Lesson design identifies the new mathematical concept to be taught, the representations and structures that are needed to expose the structure as well as the STEM sentence/s to promote mathematical dialogue and key academic language.

We strongly believe that all children, given a range of resources and language structures can succeed in maths, delivering equity for all.

Implementation

  • National Curriculum framework
  • School follows the White Rose, NCETM
  • All year groups have a long-term plan to ensure the whole maths curriculum is exposed and mastered by the end of each academic year.
  • Splans are in place for each domain to ensure small step coverage and core content is progressive and exposes the skills and knowledge to be taught.
  • Daily maths mastery lessons in all year groups following the 5 big ideas.
  • EYFS, YR1 and YR 2 following ‘mastering number’ programme.
  • Daily 5/Flashbacks to revisit prior learning and embed taught skills.
  • Teachers purposefully use a range of representations and structures to expose the mathematics being taught.
  • All staff are trained, coached and monitored ‘high quality CPD’
  • Pre-domain tests and termly assessments to identify gaps in learning.

Impact

  • Children at Kanes Hill Primary School will be confident to share their understanding of their maths knowledge
  • Strong sequential curriculum in place with robust planning structures and assessment
  • Staff are developing a deep understanding of the principles and the pedagogy of the teaching of mastery.
  • Use of stem sentences and maths talk is embedded into all practises.
  • Most pupils are able to apply mathematical knowledge, concepts and procedures appropriately for their age.
  • Learners can confidently use oracy to articulate their mathematical ideas using tier 2 and 3 mathematical vocabulary.
  • Year 6 children to be at least in line with National
