Spanish
At Kanes Hill Primary School, we aim to inspire a love of languages and help pupils develop confidence in communicating in Spanish. Through engaging lessons, children not only learn to speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish but also gain an appreciation of Spanish-speaking cultures.
Spanish is taught across Years 3 to 6 using the Primary Languages Network scheme of work. Lessons focus on speaking and listening, with reading and writing introduced progressively.
Curriculum Statement
Intent
At Kanes Hill Primary School, we aim to deliver a high-quality languages education in order to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world around them. The teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provides opportunities for pupils to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and reading in the original language. Language learning will provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping students to study and work in other countries.
Implementation
Using the National Curriculum, we ensure that children receive a rich foreign languages curriculum that builds on skills and knowledge from Year 3 to Year 6. Spanish is taught in topics ensuring the integrity of the subject remains at the forefront. Linked in to each topic is cultural and traditional information pertaining to Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, allowing the students to immerse themselves in the countries’ customs and celebrations. Students have plenty of access to videos, online language games and websites, literature and songs performed by native speakers, thus having the opportunity to enhance their own pronunciation of Spanish and acquire new vocabulary, leading to confident communication.
Impact
At the end of Key stage 2 we want our children to:
• Understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish from a variety of authentic sources
• Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in Spanish
